How to Choose the Right Cutting Width: 45, 55 or 95 cm?

When choosing a reel mower, the cutting width plays a crucial role. It's not just about how much grass you can cut in one pass – the width also affects the mower’s maneuverability, working speed, and overall comfort.
How to Choose the Right Cutting Width: 45, 55 or 95 cm?
At Swardman, we offer three options: 45 cm, 55 cm, and 95 cm. Each of them comes with distinct advantages to suit different needs and types of users.

45 cm – When Precision and Agility Matter Most

Models with a 45 cm (18") cutting width are ideal for smaller or more intricate lawns. Thanks to their compact size, they are easy to handle and allow for precise mowing even in tighter areas between flowerbeds, around trees, or through narrow passages. This width is perfect for lawn areas up to approximately 600 m² (6,500 ft²), and for those who enjoy the mowing process itself and want full control over every detail.

55 cm – For Larger, Open, and Regular Lawns

The 55 cm (22") cutting width is suitable for larger lawns, roughly between 600 m² and 2,000 m² (6,500–21,500 ft²). It offers comfortable mowing, great results, and still maintains very good maneuverability. While the 45 cm model is more agile, the 55 cm model shines on spacious, open lawns without many obstacles. So even if your lawn is on the smaller side, but has a simple, regular shape and no borders or flowerbeds to work around, the 55 cm version can be a great choice.

95 cm – The Professional for Large Areas

For truly expansive lawns or professional use, our latest model – the Swardman Edwin 95 – comes into play. With its impressive 95 cm (37.4") cutting width, it is primarily designed for football fields. However, it also performs exceptionally well on large private estates, corporate grounds, or hotel gardens. Despite its size, it retains Swardman’s signature precision and elegance – including rollers that create the iconic striped pattern. Mowing with this model is highly efficient and time-saving. And for maximum comfort, you can even equip it with a seat.

So, How to Choose?

The key is to know your lawn size. Generally speaking:

Up to 600 m² (6,500 ft²) → 45 cm
600 – 2,000 m² (6,500–21,500 ft²) → 55 cm
Over 2,000 m² (21,500 ft²) → 95 cm

BUT! You should also consider the shape of your lawn, number of obstacles, and your personal preferences. For example, a small yet open and simple lawn can be mowed with a 55 cm model. Likewise, a large but complex lawn full of curves and beds may benefit from the agility of the 45 cm version.
